mixed media, collage, pastels and printmaking.
Featuring the work of Pat Mercer and Alice Whitney, Mercer-Whitney Art has
been displayed in several shows at the Saint John Arts Centre, the Sussex
Artists’ Co-Op Gallery and the Charlotte Glencross Gallery in Fredericton..
Alice Whitney
I work primarily in chalk pastel and watercolour. Drawing is my first passion;
pastel allows me to draw with the addition of rich and layered colour.
A few years ago, we had the Studio Tour at my house. One of my paintings
on display downstairs was of a view from my second-floor studio into the
bathroom across the hall. During the Studio Tour, a visitor to my studio
glanced out the doorway and gave quite a start when she saw the same view
as in the painting. "I feel as if I’m IN your painting!" she
said. I enjoyed that affirmation.
I was honoured to have two pieces accepted for the Emerging Artists Show
in Fredericton at Old Government House in 2009. I usually have work on
show at the Sussex Art Gallery (14 Maple Avenue in Sussex). I have also
shown solo at the Saint John Art Centre. In 2010, I had a solo show at
UNBSJ sponsored by the Lorenzo Society.
I taught Art at the Sussex Regional High School for a number of years. I
still enjoy the occasional teaching opportunity.
Pat Mercer
I’ve been a practicing artist for about sixteen years now. I farmed
for twenty some years before that and I’m sure that has been one
of the many things that has influenced my work along with being a mother
and gardener.
I work in different media but mainly acrylic, oil pastels, and collage.
I consider myself an intuitive painter and usually let the picture guide
me and do its own thing so to speak. I like this approach because I think
that life is like that, unpredictable and mysterious and we never know
what the outcome will be. Like most artists I think of my work as a journey
of exploration, a way of getting to know myself, others and the world I
live in.
My work has been shown in several galleries around the province including
Gallery 78 and Botanicals in Fredericton, Heron Bay Gallery in Shediac,
and Klaussen Gallery in Saint John.
At present you can find it at the Sussex Artists’ Co-Op Gallery and
my own studio (open to the public by chance or by appointment). I’ve
participated in many group shows. In late 2010 I also had a solo show at
UNBSJ under the auspices of the Lorenzo Society.
